The Marquise de Merteuil is awaiting her former lover, the Vicomte de Valmont. Their affair has long since lost any sexual desire, but now their game with language and their memories of the victims of all their past intriguing is much more lascivious and cruel. They play out the past and switch roles, in a play within the play that ends fatally. Heiner Müller wrote Quartett in 1980/81, basing the work on the epistolary novel Dangerous Liaisons by Choderlos de Laclos. With Isabelle Huppert as Merteuil and Ariel Garcia Valdès as Valmont the great American director Robert Wilson directs Heiner Müller’s best-known play with a dream cast – a production of world significance that will be shown in the German-speaking world exclusively by spielzeiteuropa.
