Theatertreffen in China

From 2016 bis 2021, WuPromotion in cooperation with Goethe-Institut China and the support of the Berliner Festspiele invited two to three productions of the Theatertreffen to China. The productions were selected by a German-Chinese advisory board consisting of experts from the field of culture.

Theatertreffen in China 2023

From 16 to 24 September, the Goethe-Institut China hosted a programme dedicated to the 2023 Theatertreffen in Beijing. From 25 June to 2 July 2022, a programme dedicated to the Theatertreffen 2022 took place once again in Beijing. In addition to screenings of two productions from the year in question – “Das neue Leben (The New Life)” directed by Christopher Rüping) and “All right. Good night.”, directed by Helgard Haug, both in German with Chinese subtitles – audience discussions were offered in the presence of the directors, who were digitally connected to the Goethe-Institut in Beijing. The talks were simultaneously translated into Chinese and also into Chinese sign language. The Chinese theatre director Chen Ran was one of the moderators. The series was again organised as a cooperation between the Theatertreffen and the Goethe-Institut China and was very well received by the audience with a capacity of 100 %.
In November 2023, “Das neue Leben” was shown live in Beijing and Shanghai in an unplugged version.

Theatertreffen in China 2021

This is the second year in which Theatertreffen in China was hosted in a special edition without guest performances. From 27 to 29 August, video screenings of theatre performances invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen were presented at the Beijing Tianqiao Performing Arts Center:

“Maria Stuart”, directed by Anne Lenk and invited to the 2021 Theatertreffen and “Stolpersteine Staatstheater”, directed by Hans-Werner Kroesinger and invited to the Theatertreffen in 2016. The programme was complemented by introductions to the plays at Goethe-Institut China in Beijing. Further screenings of “Maria Stuart”“Stolpersteine Staatstheater” as well as “Die Kränkungen der Menschheit”, directed by Anta Helene Recke (Theatertreffen 2020) and “Five Easy Pieces”, directed by Milo Rau (Theatertreffen 2017) took place between October 2021 and January 2022 at the Wuzhen Theatre Festival, the Guangzhou Opera House, the Shenzhen Huaxia Performing Arts Center and at Hangzhou Xixi Live.

In addition, there were digital introductions and audience discussions for all the screened productions, which were joined by members of the creative teams online. There was access for a total of 720 viewers for these events and they were all accessed to capacity.

In 2021, Goethe-Institut China and Berliner Festspiele cooperated to organise a programme featuring the Theatertreffen’s Stückemarkt.

In April and May of 2021, three two-day in-person workshops were hosted by Goethe-Institut Beijing: Directors and dramaturgs from across China discussed three selected plays with the authors and their Chinese translators.

“Coop (German: Zaun)” by Sam Max (Stückemarkt 2021)
“Midnight Movie” by Eve Leigh (Stückemarkt 2021)
“Die Benennung der Tiere (The Naming of Animals)“ by Leon Engler (Stückemarkt 2018)

Following these workshops, Goethe-Institut selected three production concepts from among all participants. These will be presented in Chinese translations in Beijing and Shanghai in October, November and December 2021. The directors will be Li Zhenfeng, Liu Xiao and Xiao Jing.

In the context of the realisation of “Coop”, Goethe-Institut offered in cooperation with Yian Yunfan the first live audio description of a play in China.

Theatertreffen in China 2020

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Theatertreffen in China took place as a Special Edition.

From September to November 2020, “Theatertreffen in China: Special Edition 2020” presented performance recordings, introductions and online screenings of productions that were invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen in recent years.

To launch this programme on 26 September 2020, Goethe-Institut China presented the series “Starke Stücke” of the 2019 Theatertreffen, recorded by the television channel 3sat, with Chinese subtitles. The production recordings of “Tartuffe oder das Schwein der Weisen”“Erniedrigte und Beleidigte” and “Persona” were screened at Goethe-Institut Beijing with an introduction to each production.

In October 2020, Wu Promotion presented two further video recordings at the Beijing Tianqiao Performing Arts Center: “Five Easy Pieces” (2017 Theatertreffen) and “Tyrannis” (2016 Theatertreffen).

In addition, Goethe-Institut China and Beijing’s Inside-Out Theatre hosted a programme about the Theatertreffen’s Stückemarkt, in cooperation with Berliner Festspiele.

In July 2020, there was a four-day online workshop during which directors and dramaturgs from across China discussed two selected plays together with the authors and members of the Stückemarkt-jury:

“Das Knurren der Milchstraße” (Author: Bonn Park, 2017 Stückemarkt)
“1 yottabyte leben” (Author: Olivia Wenzel, 2018 Stückemarkt).

Following the workshop, the Goethe-Institut, together with the Beijing Inside-Out Theatre, selected three concepts for productions from all participants, which were then shown in the Chinese translations in Beijing and Shanghai in October and December 2020. The productions were directed by Xu Hongchang, Huang Jiadai and Wang Guanghao. Accompanied by artist talks and audience discussions, the first cooperation with the Stückemarkt was particularly well received by the young Chinese theatre scene.
