The most beautiful, most painful and most uncomfortable Marthaler for a long time: a celebration of life born from a Memento Mori. “Schutz vor der Zukunft” is dedicated to the children who were victims of the Nazis’ euthanasia programme. What begins as a cheerful evening with concert requests and speeches, mutates in part two into a requiem which, to the accompaniment of Shostakovitch’s Preludes and Fugues, fills the entire space with mourning. Marthaler confronts our present day cost-benefit analyses with his theatre of humanity: a theatre in which those who are different have a place and are cherished.
