Workshops

22 & 23 November 2025

Saturday, 22 November 2025
11:00 to 13:30

Workshop 1:
Arranging in the band
In this workshop, you will learn how to create a balanced band arrangement and how each instrument finds its function in the overall sound. Drums and bass form the rhythmic foundation and shape the groove, while guitar and keys contribute harmonic and tonal colours. We analyse how instruments complement each other meaningfully instead of overlapping in sound. You will also develop ideas for different styles – from pop to rock, soul, hip hop and jazz – and come up with creative concepts for backing vocals, brass or strings. The aim is to make the band's interplay more conscious and to create arrangements that are lively, transparent and stylistically appropriate. The workshop combines theory, practice and playing music together to gain a better understanding of sound, structure and dynamics.

Workshop 2:
Sculpting Sound
This workshop introduces young musicians to the art of mixing in a simple, exciting and practical way. Whether you are new to music, sing, write songs or already produce your own tracks, you will learn how to shape your sound and make your songs sound more professional.
We'll look at the most important tools of mixing: volume, panning, EQ, compression and reverb, and show how each element contributes to making a song sound good. With clear explanations and real audio examples, you'll get a solid feel for what makes a good mix. You don't need any prior knowledge, just curiosity and a love of music.

Workshop 3:
Your Skillz
This workshop is about you – and everything that makes you who you are beyond music. Together, we will discover your talents, interests and personality traits and how you can use them specifically in the music business. Because being successful doesn't mean conforming, it means staying authentic and finding your own direction. We'll talk about how to recognise your individual skills, develop them and turn them into your personal trademark. Whether it's stage presence, communication, organisation or social media – many skills contribute to your artistic identity. With practical exercises and honest exchanges, you will gain inspiration to see your path more clearly and walk it with confidence – without compromising yourself, but with genuine drive and personality.

Workshop 4:
Music production
In this workshop, we will immerse ourselves in the world of music production – from acoustic recording to digital song design. You will learn what technology you need: computers, DAWs, audio interfaces and microphones, as well as how to use them in practice. We will discuss how to record acoustic instruments, programme beats, design synth sounds, and learn what plug-ins are and how to use them. It's not just about technology, but also about musical understanding: how virtual and real instruments complement each other, how to create a harmonious arrangement in the production process. Depending on the participants' prior knowledge, we can explore individual topics in greater depth.

Workshop 5:
Finding ideas with AI – making music with Magenta Studio
Introduction to AI music production, getting to know the Magenta Studio tools, experimenting together in Ableton Live.

How can artificial intelligence (AI) inspire us when making music? In this hands-on workshop, we explore AI tools that use AI to generate new musical ideas. Together, we experiment with AI-generated grooves, harmonies and melodies and discover how they can enrich our own style. The aim is not for AI to write songs, but to use it as a creative partner: how could your beat continue, which variation suits your melody, and how does AI influence change your sound? Participants will experience AI as a source of inspiration and take away new musical ideas that they can develop into their own songs. Basic knowledge of Ableton is helpful but not required – curiosity, openness and a willingness to experiment are more important. If you have a MacBook with Ableton Live, please let us know and be sure to bring it with you to the workshop.

Workshop 6:
Songwriting workshop
The songwriting workshop is all about your song, your own artistic expression and personality. Here you will be given the tools you need to tell your story, find your lyrical voice and realise it in song lyrics. When writing song lyrics, there are many creative ways to find your own individual expression. From brainstorming and free associative writing to structuring a text in a musical context, you will learn what makes a song lyric and what steps to take. How important are individuality and intuition when writing? How does good storytelling work? What possibilities are there for working with metaphors and imagery? How important are rhymes and what makes a good hook line? How essential are catch phrases and concept songs these days? These questions will be answered here. So come along and let the world hear what you can do.

Workshop 1:
In – Me out: The sound of the body
How strongly does the voice influence our physicality? To what extent does the body limit the pitch and resonance of the voice? Whether you use your voice in your music or not, you are the source of an instrument, and this instrument is an extension of yourself. In this workshop, singers and musicians learn to unleash the full potential of their voice and body and to use their energy optimally for performances and when making music. By connecting the body and voice, you will learn breathing and relaxation techniques for stress management and stage fright. We will look at frequencies and vibrations so that you can develop a strong, natural voice that resonates in the body and releases positive energy. Learn to relax your muscles and regulate your heartbeat – improve your stamina, stage presence and self-confidence. In addition, extended vocal techniques will be introduced and the vocal possibilities of the dynamic repertoire of expression will be expanded. Comfortable clothing and shoes or soft socks are recommended.

Workshop 2:
Sources of income & financial basics for musicians
How do musicians actually earn money today and what should you pay attention to?
This workshop provides a compact overview of the most important sources of income in the music industry, from live gigs, streaming and merchandise to dubbing and subsidies. In addition to practical insights into structures such as GEMA, GVL and typical types of contracts, organisational basics are also covered: where and how to register, which legal frameworks are relevant and what constitutes the financial basis of a professional music career?
The aim is to develop a realistic understanding of one's own economic foundation and to gain an overview of the first administrative steps.

Campus: Treffen junge Musikszene X Treffen junger Autor*innen

As a meeting format, this part of the campus programme is aimed at participants in the Young Music Scene Meeting and Young Authors' Meeting and is also largely closed to the public.

Workshops

Sunday, 23 November 2025
13:30 to 16:30

Workshop 1:
Hearing words – telling stories with sound
In this joint workshop for participants of the Young Authors' Meeting and the Young Music Scene Meeting, short live radio plays will be created from language and sound. The authors bring along text excerpts (approx. 1 page) – whether prose, poetry or dialogue – and, in collaboration with the musicians, a suitable soundscape is designed. You will experiment with noises, voices, instruments and sound effects to make the moods of your texts audible. Various materials and tools for sound production will be provided so that you can give free rein to your creativity. Your texts and sounds will be used to create a shared acoustic world, which you will perform live to each other at the end of the workshop.

Workshop 2:
Between sound and words — is language music?
What defines my own voice? What forms of expression can I find for it — in speaking, singing, making music and writing? And to what extent am I inspired by other voices? Is music language — is language music? In this workshop, we explore acoustic and electronic human and more-than-human voices as starting points for our own new texts, pieces and songs. We will loop and examine the ancient, timeless relationship between the magic of words and sound: how breath, rhythm, repetition and resonance shape meaning — and how musical principles can be translated into language and text. We will draw inspiration from birdsong and whale song, (vocal) performance art, graphic scores and concrete poetry.

Workshop 3:
Wow Wow Wonder – Workshop
The workshop invites participants to explore the expressive potential of language beyond its literal meaning. Words and sentences become sound, rhythm and musical material. This creates access to the inner musicality of texts, which can be experienced anew on a tonal level.
Through playful experimentation, participants explore how tonal and formal changes in language open up new meanings and interpretations. Through modulations and sonic experiments, it becomes clear how spoken or sung language becomes new material – and how a connection between text and voice is created. Based on participants' own texts – such as poems, song lyrics, short stories – the workshop introduces the defragmentation of language and the exploration of its sonic potential. We will work with various forms of phonetic and semantic transformation: from onomatopoeia to vocal distortions, extreme articulation, syllable stretching and playful linguistic elements inspired by gibberish. The focus is on the encounter between language and sound – and the invitation to rediscover the word as a space for connection between cultures, languages and sonic identities. Please bring a short text you have written yourself. One sentence is often enough, so choose it carefully.

Workshop 4:
What a difference a place makes...
Language has rhythm, music is a language – and places have their own sound. In this workshop, we will explore together how sound, rhythm and language resonate with spaces. We will start with traditions such as hunger stones and New York graffiti – traces in which places themselves become narrators. After a poetic impulse about the relationship between music and literature, we will set out to find the voices of our surroundings through writing, listening and experimenting. What does a space reveal to us? How does it change our expression? In pairs, we explore the house, discover sound spaces and create poetic-musical miniatures – odes, serenades, text installations. Words, sounds and places interweave to form living literature: audible, tangible, connected to place.

Workshop 5:
Rap Labor
In this workshop, you will immerse yourself in the world of rap and spoken word. You will learn how rap lyrics are written, what makes a compelling track, and the stylistic facets that hip hop has to offer. From creative lyric writing and various rhyming techniques to producing your own beats, you will acquire the tools you need to develop your own rap song. How do you build rhyme chains and what types of emphasis are there? What are patterns and flow switches? What role do rhythm and melody play? What are catch phrases? And how does freestyle rap actually work? These questions will be answered here. Once you have developed your lyrics, you will have the opportunity to record them with the beat and take the result home with you as an MP3 file.
