Lecture Performance | Spätschicht x Anta Recke

Aus der Sonne

By Cem Kaya and Anta Recke

Anta Recke’s film Aus der Sonne marks the starting point of her artistic engagement with Africanness. It was developed as part of a series of projects exploring West African art films, Afropean cultural practices and the colonial dynamics of European-African art production.

The film explores themes such as language, the loss of African languages and the global diaspora, asking how art can function as an effective mode of engagement within these fields. Together with filmmaker Cem Kaya, Recke has developed a lecture-performance format in which the video works from Aus der Sonne are placed in a performative context.

Cem Kaya initially worked as a producer, editor and director of commercials and music videos. With the documentaries Arabeks (2010) and Remake, Remix, Rip-Off (2014), he turned his attention to Turkish popular culture. His documentary Aşk, Mark ve Ölüm / Love, Deutschmarks and Death (2022), which explores the music culture of migrant workers from Turkey in Germany, received several awards, including the 2022 Berlinale Audience Award and the 2024 Grimme Preis.

Anta Recke is a director, dramaturge, conceptual artist and author. Her productions Mittelreich (Middle Rich, 2017) and The Humiliations of Mankind (2019) were invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen. In 2021, she directed the world premiere of the stage adaptation of Olivia Wenzel’s debut novel 1000 Coils of Fear at the Maxim Gorki Theater. She is also co-founder and co-director of the German Museum for Black Entertainment and Black Music.
