With BAUBAU, the artist Kerstin Br&auml;tsch designed an&nbsp;admission-free play space for kids, where more is allowed than forbidden. On Gropius Bau’s ground floor, colourful wallpapers, structures, objects and open-ended material called “loose parts” configure flexible spaces that are shaped by children’s activities.

What is and has been the role of play in public space? Gabriela Burkhalter’s&nbsp;Playing in the City&nbsp;presentation traces the history of playgrounds since their emergence in 1900 to today. The free presentation is open to all and can be seen in two rooms next to BAUBAU’s entrance.

With Diane Arbus: Konstellationen, Gropius Bau presents the most comprehensive exhibition of her work to date. Featuring 454 prints, many of them shown here for the first time, Konstellationen offers new perspectives on Arbus’ iconic images and the wide range of her portraiture.

Ligia Lewis is a central figure in redefining performance within the context of the visual arts. In her multifaceted practice, she combines performance, live installation and film. From autumn 2025, Gropius Bau presents I’M NOT HERE FORRRRR…, the artist and choreographer’s most comprehensive solo exhibition to date. It brings together new and existing works that explore themes of race, gender, violence and resistance.

How does the bourgeois longing for revolt take shape, when the faith in progress and reason is unsettled? Berlin-based artist and director Leila Hekmat explores this question in her newly commissioned performance Roses Rising – The Movement, premiering in the Gropius Bau’s atrium. Moving between concert and ballet, the piece transforms the space into a landscape hovering between bunker, rehearsal room and dreamscape and invites the audience to witness a dinner party unravel into a happening.

Working in New York City between the Stonewall uprising of 1969 and the onset of the AIDS crisis in the 1980s, Peter Hujar captured a pivotal cultural moment in piercing black-and-white photographs. In the exhibition Persistence of Vision, Hujar’s photographs are interspersed with contemporary works by New York City-based artist Liz Deschenes, opening up an intergenerational dialogue on photography.&nbsp;

<h3>About the Exhibition</h3>
An exhibition is devoted worldwide for the first time to the entire early history of the Japanese island chain, from the earliest evidence of settlements to the first palaces of the Japanese emperors.
The Reiss-Engelhorn Museums of Archaeology and Ethnology in Mannheim took the initiative and conceived the exhibition over a period of many years together with one of the curators who also worked in Japan.
Agreements reached with the most important museums and collections of Japan have made it possible to bring this eminent exhibition to Germany.
After years of preparation, the biggest and most comprehensive exhibition on the pre- and early history of Japan ever to be put together will be presented in the Martin-Gropius-Bau. An exhibition of this dimension has never been undertaken in Japan or anywhere else in the world. It is unlikely that such an extensive total survey of Japanese archaeological research will be seen again in the near future.
The exhibition covers the period from the earliest settlement of the Japanese islands at least 40,000 years ago up to the introduction of Buddhism in the 6th century and the Asuka and Nara period (7th/8th century AD) with its great palaces.
Around 1500 objects from 55 different Japanese museums and institutions will be displayed – most of which have never been shown outside of Japan before, including national treasures and objects classified as important cultural heritage of the nation.
With its research findings Japanese archaeology is among the most modern of its kind in the world and has had unprecedented success since the war. This exhibition takes stock of the research results and the spectacular finds of the post-war period which have previously not been taken into account and remained largely unknown beyond the country’s own borders, although they have become an important factor for the historical understanding and self-perception of present-day Japan. Upheavals and continuities form a further focus of the exhibition.

<h3>Archaeology in Japan – the Past in the Present</h3>
Present-day Japan is marked by technological progress and economic expansion as well as by the immediate confrontation with a tradition whose roots reach far back into archaic times. This is evident not least of all in the extent and importance given to the science of archaeology in Japan today. With its research findings Japanese archaeology is among the most modern of its kind in the world and has had unprecedented success since the war, with tens of thousands of excavations and innumerable objects having been found.

Musikfest Berlin in the Media Library

The international Jazzfest Research Lab&nbsp;welcomes academics and students to take a critical look at the festival’s archive, its programmes, creators, musicians and – last but not least – its myths. In two seminars during the summer semester of 2024, students from the Berlin University of the Arts and the University of Hildesheim have explored the festival’s history from various perspectives. In this film, the participants give a first look at how they dealt with their research subject.

Introducing: Jazzfest Research Lab

To mark its 60th anniversary, Jazzfest Berlin is celebrating the cultural diversity of the neighbouring district of Moabit in collaboration with around 35 official partners and initiatives and with over 350 participants of all ages.&nbsp;In June 2024, interviews were conducted with 20 partners who presented their perspectives, wishes and ideas for the Jazzfest Community Lab Moabit. These guest concerts include some of the world’s best symphony orchestras and choirs from Finland, Spain, England, South Africa, the USA, Austria, Germany and Switzerland.
