The international literature festival berlin, or ilb for short, is considered one of the most important literary festivals in the world. The programme for the 25th&nbsp;ilb will take place from 11 to 20&nbsp;September 2025. The Young Programme will run from 15 to 24&nbsp;September 2025. The main venue is the Haus der Berliner Festspiele, with additional locations for the Young Programme including Theater an der Parkaue and the Gelbe Villa.

Playing, laughing, making noise, letting off steam, doing nothing – all in an exhibition venue! With BAUBAU, the artist Kerstin Br&auml;tsch designed an&nbsp;admission-free play space for kids, where more is allowed than forbidden. On the Gropius Bau’s ground floor, colourful wallpapers, structures, objects and open-ended material called “loose parts” configure flexible spaces that are shaped by children’s activities.

A Short History from 1900 to the Present

What has been the role of play in public space, both historically and in the present? Complementing BAUBAU, our free play space for kids, Gabriela Burkhalter’s&nbsp;Playing in the City&nbsp;presentation traces the history of playgrounds since their emergence in 1900 to today. The free presentation is open to all and can be seen in two rooms next to the play space’s entrance.

For more than three decades, Rirkrit Tiravanija has been expanding the possibilities of what can happen in an exhibition space. As part of his practice, the artist creates situations that offer space to eat and drink, play and rest. They encourage chance encounters, relationships and their failure – in other words: life.&nbsp;The exhibition&nbsp;DAS GL&Uuml;CK IST NICHT IMMER LUSTIG&nbsp;(Happiness is not always fun)&nbsp;presents more than 80 of the artist’s works created between 1987 and 2024.

The photographer Ré Soupault was at the heart of classical Modernism in both Berlin and Paris. Born Meta Erna Niemeyer in Bublitz, Pomerania, in 1901, Ré Soupault was one of the most important female photographers of the 20th century. After training at the Bauhaus in Weimar (1921–1925) under Johannes Itten, Wassily Kandinsky, Georg Muche, Oskar Schlemmer, Paul Klee and others, she became part of the European avant-garde movements of the 1920s and 1930s. In 1923/24 she worked with the Swedish avant-garde film-maker Viking Eggeling on his film “Diagonal Symphony”.
In 1925 she made the acquaintance of Man Ray and Fernand Léger in Paris. She left Weimar for good in 1925 and worked as a fashion journalist for the periodicals “Silberspiegel” and “Sport im Bild” published by Berlin’s Scherl-Verlag, for which she also active as a correspondent in Paris. In 1926 she married the Dadaist and painter Hans Richter. Their flat in Berlin’s Trabenerstrasse became a meeting place for the international avant-garde. In 1928, after her journalistic work for Scherl-Verlag, she set up the fashion studio “Ré Sport” in Paris, which she ran until 1934. She designed prêt-à-porter, made clothes for Bohemian society women in Paris and worked closely with Man Ray, who photographed her spring and autumn collections.
In 1933 she met a co-founder of the Surrealism movement, Philippe Soupault, who had collaborated with André Breton on “The Magnetic Fields” and whom she married in 1936. In Paris she belonged to the circle of artists around Man Ray, Fernand Léger, Florence Henri, Gisèle Freund, Elsa Triolet, Helen Hessel, Max Ernst, Henryk Berlewi, Kiki, Foujita, Sonia and Robert Delaunay, André Kertesz, and Alberto Giacometti. Philippe Soupault had been one of the leading French journalists since the end of the 1920s and worked for “VU”, “Excelsior” and “L’Intransigeant”, among others. He persuaded Ré to illustrate his pieces.
Ré Soupault’s photographic work covers the period between 1934 and 1952, during which time she travelled to Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Norway, Finland, the U.S.A. and Tunisia. From the very start she used a 6x6 and 4x4 Rolleiflex camera and a Leica. Following her escape from Tunis and a four-year sojourn in North, Central and South America, Ré Soupault settled in Basle in 1948. There she worked as a translator (for Romain Rolland, Lautréamont, Tristan Tzara and others) and studied under Karl Jaspers.
From the mid-1950s the artist again lived in Paris, where she worked until her death in 1996 as a translator, writer, film-maker, author of radio plays and essays, and publisher of fairy tale anthologies. Photojournalism, portraits and scenes of everyday life dominated her photographic work, which is striking for its use of straight lines, clarity, variety and timelessness. No photograph is set up, “it all came from life” (Ré Soupault). The photographic work comprising about 1,500 negatives and some 150 vintage prints – initially believed lost – was not rediscovered until the end of the 1980s.
The Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin shows a major retrospective on the work of Ré Soupault. The first overall survey of her oeuvre, it contains about 250 items, a quarter of them vintage prints. Many of the works are on display for the first time after their rediscovery.

The international Jazzfest Research Lab&nbsp;welcomes academics and students to take a critical look at the festival’s archive, its programmes, creators, musicians and – last but not least – its myths. In two seminars during the summer semester of 2024, students from the Berlin University of the Arts and the University of Hildesheim have explored the festival’s history from various perspectives. Introducing: Jazzfest Research Lab

To mark its 60th anniversary, Jazzfest Berlin is celebrating the cultural diversity of the neighbouring district of Moabit in collaboration with around 35 official partners and initiatives and with over 350 participants of all ages.&nbsp;In June 2024, interviews were conducted with 20 partners who presented their perspectives, wishes and ideas for the Jazzfest Community Lab Moabit. The 10 Remarkable Productions 2024

On 26 January, the Theatertreffen’s jury of critics announced their selection of 10 remarkable productions for the 2024 Theatertreffen at a press conference. Our congratulations go to the nominated production teams and all participants! The programme will be published on 5 April.

Theatertreffen 2024

“Radical Playgrounds”, an art parcours at the Gropius Bau, is spending eleven weeks exploring the differences between the concepts of play as competition and free play. Visitors are invited to walk and climb on the various installations and sculptures, to activate them and to shape the project collectively.

Summer School 2025

As part of Performing Exiles there will be a Summer School from 16 to 28&nbsp;June 2025. This will offer workshops, seminars and mentoring. The participants will see the performances and guest productions in the festival programme and visit artistic initiatives and cultural institutions in Berlin that operate across a wide range of disciplines and contexts. A public presentation of the participants’ current work and research at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele will complete the programme.
