The international literature festival berlin, or ilb for short, is considered one of the most important literary festivals in the world. The programme for the 25th&nbsp;ilb will take place from 11 to 20&nbsp;September 2025. The Young Programme will run from 15 to 24&nbsp;September 2025. The main venue is the Haus der Berliner Festspiele, with additional locations for the Young Programme including Theater an der Parkaue and the Gelbe Villa.

Since the 1950s, Yoko Ono has been ahead of her time, leaving her mark on visual arts, music and activism. To honour her groundbreaking work, Gropius Bau presents the comprehensive solo exhibition&nbsp;YOKO ONO: MUSIC OF THE MIND. Spanning the first floor and the atrium of Gropius Bau, the show brings together over 200 works from seven decades, revealing her radical approach to language, art and participation that continues to speak to the present moment.

Playing, laughing, making noise, letting off steam, doing nothing – all in an exhibition venue! With BAUBAU, the artist Kerstin Br&auml;tsch designed an&nbsp;admission-free play space for kids, where more is allowed than forbidden. On Gropius Bau’s ground floor, colourful wallpapers, structures, objects and open-ended material called “loose parts” configure flexible spaces that are shaped by children’s activities.

What has been the role of play in public space, both historically and in the present? Complementing BAUBAU, our free play space for kids, Gabriela Burkhalter’s&nbsp;Playing in the City&nbsp;presentation traces the history of playgrounds since their emergence in 1900 to today. The free presentation is open to all and can be seen in two rooms next to the play space’s entrance.

The Practice – What Moves Artists

The Practice – What Moves Artists&nbsp;is a new book series by Gropius Bau that invites artists to showcase a practice that they pursue, that has influenced them or that has been with them for a long time. In the second volume of the series, artist, performer and author Vaginal Davis looks back on the saucy underground scenes of Los Angeles and Berlin together with former bandmates.&nbsp;On Dangerous Ground recounts past gigs, spectacular live performances and well-kept secrets.

Ausstellungen 2015

Der Staatsbesuch des deutschen Bundeskanzlers Konrad Adenauer 1955 in Moskau, die Errichtung der Berliner Mauer 1961 oder der Abschluss des KSZE-Prozesses im August 1975 in Helsinki: Es sind viele und facettenreiche Ereignisse, die die Annäherungen zwischen Deutschen und Russen nach dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges markierten. Die Ausstellung „Russland und Deutschland. Von der Konfrontation zur Zusammenarbeit“ greift diejenigen heraus, die sowohl von deutscher als auch von russischer Seite als Wegmarken des Annäherungsprozesses der ehemaligen Kriegsgegner seit 1945 bewertet werden.
Anlass für die Ausstellung ist der 70. Jahrestag des Endes des Zweiten Weltkrieges in diesem Jahr. Der vom nationalsozialistischen Deutschland begonnene Zweite Weltkrieg gilt mit etwa 60 Millionen Kriegstoten weltweit als der verlustreichste Krieg, den es je gab. Niemals zuvor wurden mehr Menschen getötet und größere Zerstörungen angerichtet. Dies gilt insbesondere für den Vernichtungskrieg, den das Deutsche Reich seit dem 22. Juni 1941 gegen die UdSSR führte. Die Sowjetunion hatte 27 Millionen Tote zu beklagen, davon waren mindestens 14 Millionen Zivilisten. Auf deutscher Seite kamen mehr als fünf Millionen Soldaten und über eine Million Zivilpersonen um. Der Krieg endete in Europa in der Nacht vom 8./9. Mai 1945 mit der bedingungslosen Kapitulation der Wehrmacht im heutigen Museumsgebäude des Deutsch-Russischen Museums Berlin-Karlshorst.
Im Rahmen des zweijährigen Ausstellungsprojektes kooperiert das Deutsch-Russische Museum Berlin-Karlshorst mit dem Staatsarchiv der Russischen Föderation. Ergebnis sind zwei Ausstellungen in Berlin und Moskau. Die Ausstellungen wurden von einer deutsch-russischen Arbeitsgruppe, die in Moskau und Berlin tagte, erarbeitet. Basierend auf historischen Dokumenten, präsentieren beide Ausstellungen die wesentlichen Etappen des Annäherungsprozesses der beiden Länder mitsamt ihren Höhen und Tiefen: Sie beginnt zeitlich am 8./9. Mai 1945 und endet im Januar 2014 – mit der Rede des russischen Schriftstellers Daniil Granin im Deutschen Bundestag am 27. Januar. Die dargestellten zeitlichen Zäsuren und historischen Ereignisse geben dabei die Dynamik und Bandbreite der deutsch-russischen Beziehungen seit 1945 wider, die von Krisen und Misstrauen bis hin zu anhaltenden Phasen großer Kooperationsbereitschaft und Vertrauen gekennzeichnet sind.
Die Narrative der Ausstellung sind komplex, sie müssen vielfältigen Staatenkonstellationen und daraus resultierenden Beziehungsstrukturen gerecht werden. So werden neben den Beziehungen der DDR und der „alten“ Bundesrepublik zur Sowjetunion auch die des wiedervereinigten Deutschlands zur Sowjetunion und späteren Russischen Föderation beleuchtet. Diesen Phasen der Bedrohung, intensiver Zusammenarbeit, Ablehnung und Vertrauen die Ausstellung schlaglichtartig.
Sie stellt daher neun historische Ereignisse – neun zeitliche Zäsuren – in den Mittelpunkt der Schau. Diese bilden jeweils den Einstieg in eine Ausstellungseinheit:

An diese Zäsuren schließen sich weitere Ereignisse an, die in zeitlicher Nähe zu den Auftaktereignissen stehen, aber nicht streng chronologisch erzählt werden. Diese Einheiten werden getragen von Originalen sowie Faksimiles historischer Dokumente: Vertragswerke, Gesprächs-protokolle, Urkunden oder Dankesschreiben. An rund 50 Stationen kann der Besucher diese Dokumente lesen und sich somit einen vertieften Einblick verschaffen. So sind die Kapitulationsurkunden vom 8./9. Mai 1945 in drei Sprachfassungen ebenso zu sehen wie der Originalentwurf des Erdgas-Röhren-Abkommens aus dem Jahr 1970, die KSZE-Schlussakte aus dem Jahr 1975 oder der Zwei-Plus-Vier-Vertrag aus dem Jahr 1990. Dieser wurde u.a. vom letzten Ministerpräsident der DDR, Lothar de Maizière unterzeichnet. Der Füllfederhalter, den er hierfür benutzte, ist in der Ausstellung zu sehen. Er ist eines von dreidimensionalen Exponaten, die in der Ausstellung gezeigt werden. Ein weiteres, besonders Exponat ist das originale „Ehrenbuch“ vom Sowjetischen Ehrenmal im Treptower Park, in dem die Namen der dort bestatteten Rotarmisten aufgeführt sind.
Historische Foto- und Filmaufnahmen runden die Ausstellung ab: Eine „Galerie der Begegnungen“ im Eingangsbereich stimmt den Besucher auf die Ausstellung ein; eine partizipative Medieninstallation am Ausstellungsrundgang schließt sie ab. Hier hat der Besucher die Möglichkeit, seine Meinung, Gedanken und Einschätzungen zu den deutsch-russischen Beziehungen zu äußern. Er kann dies auf Deutsch, Russisch und Englisch tun – den drei Sprachen, in denen die Ausstellung präsentiert wird.
Ein weiteres Narrativ der Ausstellung sind 14 Biografien bzw. „biografische Schlaglichter“. Sie erzählen die Lebenswege von sieben russischen bzw. sowjetischen und sieben deutschen Persönlichkeiten des politischen, kulturellen und wissenschaftlichen Lebens, die sie nach Deutschland und Russland, in die Sowjetunion und in beide deutsche Staaten geführt haben. Dazu gehören u.a. der Filmemacher Konrad Wolf, die Leiterin des ersten Goethe-Instituts in der Sowjetunion, Kathinka Dittrich van Weringh, die engen Schriftsteller-Freunde Lew Kopelew und Heinrich Böll, die sowjetische Kulturoffizierin Jewgenia Kazewa oder der sowjetische Bildhauer Vadim Sidur, dessen Werke vor allem in der Bundesrepublik der 1980er-Jahre Beachtung fanden.
Für Design und Architektur der Ausstellung zeichnet büroberlin verantwortlich. Die Architektinnen von büroberlin haben auf der Grundlage des Ausstellungskonzeptes einen Gestaltungsentwurf erarbeitet, der die Begriffe „Mosaik“, „Seismograph“ und „Facetten“ zum gestalterischen Prinzip erhebt. Damit sollen die weder linear noch zwangsläufig verlaufenden deutsch-russischen Beziehungen seit 1945 dargestellt werden, sodass die Dynamik mit Brüchen und auch Leerstellen sich auch in der Ausstellungsgestaltung widerspiegelt.
Parallel zur Präsentation im Martin-Gropius-Bau Berlin wird vom 10. November 2015 bis zum 18. Januar 2016 eine gleichnamige Ausstellung im Staatlichen Historischen Museum in Moskau zu sehen sein.

A multitude of varied events shaped the rapprochement of Germans and Russians after the end of World War II. Cooperation between the German-Russian Museum Berlin-Karlshorst and the State Archive of the Russian Federation has produced an exhibition that focuses on important landmarks in the post-1945 process of reconciliation of these former enemies. The trends in their mutual relationship are reflected in historical documents and biographies. Visitors learn what 14 pathfinders on the road to German-Russian understanding had to say, among them authors Lev Kopelev and Heinrich Böll. The exhibition was prompted by the 70th anniversary this year of the end of the World War II.

In two seminars during the summer semester of 2024, students from the Berlin University of the Arts and the University of Hildesheim have explored the festival’s history from various perspectives. To mark its 60th anniversary, Jazzfest Berlin is celebrating the cultural diversity of the neighbouring district of Moabit in collaboration with around 35 official partners and initiatives and with over 350 participants of all ages.&nbsp;In June 2024, interviews were conducted with 20 partners who presented their perspectives, wishes and ideas for the Jazzfest Community Lab Moabit. The 10 Remarkable Productions 2024

On 26 January, the Theatertreffen’s jury of critics announced their selection of 10 remarkable productions for the 2024 Theatertreffen at a press conference. Our congratulations go to the nominated production teams and all participants! The programme will be published on 5 April.

“Radical Playgrounds”, an art parcours at the Gropius Bau, is spending eleven weeks exploring the differences between the concepts of play as competition and free play. Visitors are invited to walk and climb on the various installations and sculptures, to activate them and to shape the project collectively.

Summer School 2025

As part of Performing Exiles there will be a Summer School from 16 to 28&nbsp;June 2025. This will offer workshops, seminars and mentoring. The participants will see the performances and guest productions in the festival programme and visit artistic initiatives and cultural institutions in Berlin that operate across a wide range of disciplines and contexts. A public presentation of the participants’ current work and research at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele will complete the programme.
