The international literature festival berlin, or ilb for short, is considered one of the most important literary festivals in the world. The programme for the 25th&nbsp;ilb will take place from 11 to 20&nbsp;September 2025. The Young Programme will run from 15 to 24&nbsp;September 2025. The main venue is the Haus der Berliner Festspiele, with additional locations for the Young Programme including Theater an der Parkaue and the Gelbe Villa.

A&nbsp;Play Space for Kids

Playing, laughing, making noise, letting off steam, doing nothing – all in an exhibition venue! With BAUBAU, the artist Kerstin Br&auml;tsch designed an&nbsp;admission-free play space for kids, where more is allowed than forbidden. On the Gropius Bau’s ground floor, colourful wallpapers, structures, objects and open-ended material called “loose parts” configure flexible spaces that are shaped by children’s activities.

A Short History from 1900 to the Present

What has been the role of play in public space, both historically and in the present? Complementing BAUBAU, our free play space for kids, Gabriela Burkhalter’s&nbsp;Playing in the City&nbsp;presentation traces the history of playgrounds since their emergence in 1900 to today. The free presentation is open to all and can be seen in two rooms next to the play space’s entrance.

For more than three decades, Rirkrit Tiravanija has been expanding the possibilities of what can happen in an exhibition space. As part of his practice, the artist creates situations that offer space to eat and drink, play and rest. They encourage chance encounters, relationships and their failure – in other words: life.&nbsp;The exhibition&nbsp;DAS GL&Uuml;CK IST NICHT IMMER LUSTIG&nbsp;(Happiness is not always fun)&nbsp;presents more than 80 of the artist’s works created between 1987 and 2024.

Lee Miller began her artistic career in Paris in 1929, when she began taking surrealist photographs with Man Ray. She was more than merely his muse and assistant, since the photographs were often created in close collaboration. In the nude photographs, which Man Ray took of her, Miller – a photo model for Vogue - deliberately put herself into the limelight.
In her own photographs – nudes, portraits and street scenes – she focused on surrealism’s stylistic devices and developed her own artistic language: Miller distorted the motifs of image by choosing close-cropped image details, fragmenting the human body and working with solarisation techniques, hence reversing the black and white values using strong overexposure.
After a short stay in the USA since 1932, where she continued to run her photo studio that she had founded in Paris, Miller followed her husband to Egypt in 1934. There and in subsequent trips over Athens to Bucharest, the photographer recorded landscapes, architecture and people in her photographs. Her eye for the ambiguity of reality, rooted in surrealism, is found again in the natural forms of her landscape pictures.
In 1938 Miller settled in England, working for a photographer for British Vogue from 1940 onwards, and recording the social circumstances and disastrous consequences of the Second World War as a photo-journalist. She photographed the destruction by German bombardments during the so-called “Blitz” in London. The pictures of destroyed city streets and people in full battle regalia are often staged artfully and they are still clearly characterised by Surrealism.
As one of few Americans, Miller obtained accreditation as a war correspondent and reported from the American front line for Vogue since 1944: She photographed the liberation of Normandy by the Allies and went through Europe with the advancing American troupes. Her works as a photo-journalist are characterised by an increasingly direct and objective pictorial language, which focuses on the documentary aspect. From 1945 on Miller photographed the consequences of the war in Germany and Austria and recorded as one of the first photographers the crimes of National Socialists in recently freed concentration camps in Dachau and Buchenwald. During a stop-over in Munich Muller spent time in Adolf Hitler’s private apartment, which had been occupied by American soldiers, and staged herself in the famous photograph of herself in the dictator’s bathtub – a politically charged act of appropriation allowing for manifold interpretations. The photograph was taken by her colleague David E. Sherman. In her entire photographic work Lee Miller created both staged as well as documentary images, which are unique exactly in their subjectivity and ambiguity.
The exhibition presents the entire spectrum of Lee Miller’s photographic work. All photographs in the exhibition – predominantly vintage prints – including portraits of Lee Miller by Man Ray, Sacha Masour and David E. Scherman, are on loan by the Lee Miller Archives.

Lee Miller (1907-1977) is one of the most versatile US-photographers and photo-journalists of the 20th century. She united opposed genres such as surrealism, fashion, portrait and travel photography, as well as war reporting into her repertoire of works. The exhibition leads through the photographer’s diverse stations of life in New York, from Paris and Egypt up to Germany. Approximately 100 photographs that are exhibited illustrate Lee Miller’s life from different perspectives: as assistant, muse and partner of Man Ray in Paris in the 1930s; and as a pioneer of art photography and a photo-journalist during the Second World War. Her photographs of Germany’s national-socialist aerial bombardments of London, the liberation of Paris and the concentration camps in Dachau and Buchenwald are ranked amongst the most haunting war documents of the 20th century.

The international Jazzfest Research Lab&nbsp;welcomes academics and students to take a critical look at the festival’s archive, its programmes, creators, musicians and – last but not least – its myths. In two seminars during the summer semester of 2024, students from the Berlin University of the Arts and the University of Hildesheim have explored the festival’s history from various perspectives. Introducing: Jazzfest Research Lab

To mark its 60th anniversary, Jazzfest Berlin is celebrating the cultural diversity of the neighbouring district of Moabit in collaboration with around 35 official partners and initiatives and with over 350 participants of all ages.&nbsp;In June 2024, interviews were conducted with 20 partners who presented their perspectives, wishes and ideas for the Jazzfest Community Lab Moabit. The 10 Remarkable Productions 2024

On 26 January, the Theatertreffen’s jury of critics announced their selection of 10 remarkable productions for the 2024 Theatertreffen at a press conference. Our congratulations go to the nominated production teams and all participants! The programme will be published on 5 April.

“Radical Playgrounds”, an art parcours at the Gropius Bau, is spending eleven weeks exploring the differences between the concepts of play as competition and free play. Visitors are invited to walk and climb on the various installations and sculptures, to activate them and to shape the project collectively.

Summer School 2025

As part of Performing Exiles there will be a Summer School from 16 to 28&nbsp;June 2025. This will offer workshops, seminars and mentoring. The participants will see the performances and guest productions in the festival programme and visit artistic initiatives and cultural institutions in Berlin that operate across a wide range of disciplines and contexts. A public presentation of the participants’ current work and research at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele will complete the programme.
