Artist Talk
Lee Mingwei in conversation with Stephanie Rosenthal on how participation and the concept of gift giving play central roles in his artistic practice.
Born in Taiwan in 1964 and currently living and working in New York and Berkeley, California, Lee Mingwei creates participatory installations, where exhibition visitors can explore issues of trust, intimacy and self-awareness, often inviting a one-on-one interaction between the visitor and the artist or the visitor and a performer. Lee Mingwei creates spaces for contemplation and reflection, with everyday activities such as eating, sleeping, walking or conversation as points of departure. Accordingly his projects are often open-ended scenarios for everyday interaction that, over the course of an exhibition, develop and change. He is particularly interested in the concept of the gift and differences in gift-giving cultures.
