Our approach to biodiversity and cultural diversity determines the quality of our future – and both can thrive in repurposed parking spaces.

People often live according to the motto: “I protect what I know.” Everyday encounters between city dwellers and nature can be the key to creating greater conservation and biodiversity in the city. But urban space often seems unfairly distributed: a significant portion of public street surfaces is reserved for parking space; cars block the space continually and are sometimes not moved for days. Here public space as a common good ultimately only serves individual usage. This project endeavours to show there is enough space for urban greenery on a car park next to the Gropius Bau and that a relatively large amount of vegetables can be cultivated in a small area. The goal is to create an opportunity for intergenerational, inclusive and intercultural encounters as well as an exchange of ideas regarding vegetable cultivation and natural cycles in urban social space – in a place otherwise reserved for cars.
