When Beijing decided to select candidates for Hong Kong’s administration chairmanship by a state committee, months of protests ensued. The so-called “Umbrella Movement” and the citizen’s rights initiative “Occupy Central with Love and Peace” demanded free elections and a move towards democracy. In "Raise the Umbrellas", activists, students and politicians have their say.
An earlier version of this film was screened at the international literature festival berlin at Haus der Berliner Festspiele in September 2018. Now, Evans Chan present a new version, which combines the 2014 demonstrations with impressions from the current protests against the proposed extradition law.
