Marcelo Evelin / Demolition Incorporada: A Invenção da Maldade

Marcelo Evelin’s latest creation came into being in Teresina, Brazil, his hometown and base of his platform for artistic experimentation, Demolition Incorporada. A Invenção da Maldade (“The Invention of Evilness”) is a raw and forceful meditation on corporeal rites and political tensions in a context that sees the rise of precarity and violence, as well as a growing intolerance toward artists and minorities. In a sparse setting made of branches, leaves and bells, the seven naked performers – all coming from different somatic and geographical backgrounds – enact a series of body states and moments of trance that evoke rage, pain, joy and chaos in turn. Transposed in the atrium of the Gropius Bau, the performance creates an immersive situation: an affective battlefield of sorts in which the spectator becomes witness, protagonist, caretaker.

Marcelo Evelin is a choreographer, teacher, researcher and performer working between Teresina (BR) and Amsterdam (NL). With his company Demolition Incorporada, Evelin has presented his performance work in over 18 countries.
