Takeover

Dark corners; rare earths; nothing ventured, nothing gained; light and water; glowing coals on wires; spooky thrills; movement and shadow; two huge trolls, mangrove mysteries; holographic homeschooling – developing these themes, Berlin primary school students curated their own exhibitions with works by international artists who are also based in Berlin. Last summer, the first iteration kicked off with Takeover. Plastic Catches Mushroom, an exhibition by Roberta Busechian and Tue Greenfort on the Gropius Bau’s south terrace. Now Vanessa Farfán, Jan Peter Hammer, Khansa Humeidan, Susanne Kriemann, Michelle-Marie Letelier, Lisa Rave and Egill Sæbjörnsson take over the gallery spaces.

The goal of the three-year-long project Kids Curate_Takeover, organised by the Gropius Bau in cooperation with the Stiftung Brandenburger Tor, is to involve children in artistic and curatorial processes. The project enables Berlin primary school students to experience and navigate the way from art production to an independently curated exhibition. School students from the current Max – Artists in Residence an Berliner Schulen programme of the Stiftung Brandenburger Tor visited the Gropius Bau regularly and got to know the activities, processes and professions of the exhibition venue. The exhibition includes a public programme curated by the kids.
