Indigo Waves and Other Stories: Re-Navigating the Afrasian Sea and Notions of Diaspora

In this tour, the artist Reem Alfahad gives insights into the exhibition Indigo Waves and Other Stories: Re-Navigating the Afrasian Sea and Notions of Diaspora.
Reem Alfahad’s practice – much like the Indian Ocean – connects between the ancestral past and present. She yearns to honour the different cultures within herself and moves through space like the ocean itself: ever-adapting, ever-transforming and in constant surrender. In this tour, she will question in what ways the Indian Ocean invites us to reflect on our own histories of connection. As Arabic diasporic thinkers, how do the perspectives of the artistic positions in the exhibition challenge our own notions of shared identity? How can we use this exploration to inform how we move, sing and embody our origins?

Reem Alfahad is an artist and researcher from Kuwait City, Kuwait. She manoeuvres between many contexts, having worked and lived in the US, London, Colombia, and now lives Berlin. Her most recent performance I’ll meet you there was held at the Weißensee Kunsthochschule in 2023. The performance explored a transforming identity, where two versions of Reem emotively unpacked notions of liberation, undoing the colonial and reclaiming her feminine body.
