Filmmaker Köken Ergun and his collaborators, animation artist Fetra Danu and composer Nadya Hatta, will give a participatory composing workshop for young people. The participants will work together with the three artists to write lyrics in German related to their geographies. They will compose and sing a collective song with catchy melodies.

The workshop starts with an input about the animation film China, Beijing, I Love You! exhibited in Indigo Waves and Other Stories: Re-Navigating the Afrasian Sea and Notions of Diaspora.

Filmmaker Köken Ergun will talk about how a tweet by a governmental organisation constituted the base of the lyrics of a song featured in the film. Fetra Danu will give an input on how he illustrated and animated the song scene. The composer Nadya Hatta will demonstrate the song composition process and introduce Indonesian TikTok music, which was the inspiration behind her composition. The music style draws influences from various genres such as pop, hip-hop, EDM and traditional Indonesian music. Many Indonesian TikTok music artists have incorporated elements of “dangdut” and “koplo” into their music, such as the use of traditional Indonesian instruments like the kendang and gendang, as well as the distinct rhythm and vocal style associated with these genres. Hatta will present several music rhythms and melodies, which can be used for the song composition.

Köken Ergun is an artist with a background in performing arts. His films often deal with communities that are barely known to a wider public and the importance of rituals in such groups. Ergun collaborates with ethnographers, historians and sociologists and, since 2020, Ergun has collaborative projects with other artists. He has exhibited internationally at documenta 14, Paris Triennale, Jakarta Biennial, Kathmandu Triennale, Salt Galata, Istanbul, Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, Moscow and Para Site, Hong Kong, among many others. He received the Tiger Award for Best Short Film at the 2007 Rotterdam Film Festival and the Special Mention Prize at the 2013 Berlinale.

Nadya Hatta is a composer, arranger and musician. She learned classical piano during her childhood but gradually became interested in exploring the piano’s sound and creating music compositions. Hatta was involved in music productions, art exhibitions and theatre and dance performances such as the Dialita women’s choir composed of survivors from the 1965 genocide in Indonesia.
