In the performance, musician André Vida interacts sonically with the installation Electrical System conceived by Holt, which extends across the Gropius Bau’s atrium. Resonating with Holt’s interest in how spaces are perceived and changed through sound and language, Vida experiments with the network of arching conduits and bulbs of the piece by moving and playing with his instrument through and with the space.

Over the course of five decades, Nancy Holt (1938–2014) explored how we perceive our environment and how we attempt to understand our place on the surface of this world. Holt’s System Works reveal the mechanics of everyday technological structures for the circulation of electricity, heat and air. Electrical System exposes something so common to contemporary life that it often goes forgotten: light. Holt referred to the work as a “fountain of light”. Visitors are invited to move around the installation and the network of light and the sound of André Vida’s saxophone along the atrium. Light as well as music travel through waves – a phenomenon Vida is playing with.
