Painting | Rirkrit Tiravanija: DAS GLÜCK IST NICHT IMMER LUSTIG

demo station: The Hero of Both

The Hero of Both has been called a short painting, a long poem and an anti-performance.
In the piece, a long poem is sent to your phone, which you are then invited to read in your head while being painted by the artist JakeSherwood. As you read, boundaries between painting and poem, private and public, being and performing start to break down. You neither have to be silent nor have to stay still – you may ask the artist anything throughout. Sherwood is keen to find ways of deepening the spaces we occupy and newly extending the magic of art outside the gallery.

Jake Sherwood was born in London, has lived in Naples, London and Berlin and has been featured in the Berliner Morgenpost and the Architects’ Journal. He now lives in Steglitz.

The event takes place on a demo station by Rirkrit Tiravanija. The stage-like sculpture invites people to “demonstrate” something. Tiravanija plays with the different meanings of the term “demonstration” as both a political protest and a presentation of someone’s talent or hobby. For the duration of the exhibition, the demo station provides a space for daily public performances.

During the event, photographs and video recordings may be made in which you may be recognisable. By attending, you consent to these recordings being used to communicate the event or exhibition.
