9 November 2024 marks the 35th anniversary of the peaceful revolution in Germany. A day that abruptly changed the lives of many people. The public tour through Rirkrit Tiravanija’s exhibition DAS GLÜCK IST NICHT IMMER LUSTIG (Happines is not always fun) sheds light on these experiences of upheaval and questions the artist’s recurring motif “Freedom cannot be simulated”, because freedom and democracy cannot be taken for granted even today and must be defended together.

For more than three decades, Tiravanija has been expanding the possibilities of what can happen in an exhibition space. As part of his practice, the artist creates situations that offer space to eat and drink, play and rest. They encourage chance encounters, relationships and their failure – in other words: life.
