As Part of The High Holidays of 5786

The image shows a two-tiered metal frame mounted into a stone wall. The lower half of a person wearing a black skirt and blue shoes is visible, stepping onto the frame. Hanging from it is a light yellow plastic bag with Hebrew lettering.

To conclude the series The High Holidays of 5786, Ariel Efraim Ashbel and friends invite you to a night-time walk and a light installation in celebration of Hanukkah.

The number of participants is limited. Please register via email at events@gropiusbau.de until 16 December, including your preferred time (19:30 or 21:00) and the subject line “Hanukkah Backflip”.

Hanukkah is the holiday of light. As the weather gets colder and the sky darker, Jewish people get together around the “Hanukkia” – the traditional candelabra, for eight nights. They gradually add candles in a symbolic act that uplifts hope and community during the cold season. As the dark times of this year seem to get even darker, the final occasion of the series The High Holidays of 5786 embeds this idea in the urban space. The night walk and an audio-visual intervention on Gropius Bau’s back façade are led by Ashbel and longtime collaborator, visual artist Alona Rodeh.

Ariel Efraim Ashbel and friends: Hanukkah Backflip feat. Alona Rodeh is presented as part of The High Holidays of 5786, a city-wide cycle of performances linked to the holidays that start the Jewish calendar. The High Holidays of 5786 is developed with and presented at HAU Hebbel am Ufer, Sophiensaele and the Gropius Bau. The project is funded by the Hauptstadtkulturfonds.

Please note: The walk will pass through areas with minimal lighting. Please come wearing dark and warm clothes and bring a cap and sunglasses. In case of rain or severe weather, the event will be cancelled.
