Bishop Black expresses themselves primarily by using movement as a language and their body as a tool, politicised through the lenses of sexuality, gender and race. As part of the Sp&auml;tschicht x Schwules Museum programme, the performance Can I Visit Your Temple will take place in the atrium.

Working within the concepts of dream work, sexuality and themes related to BDSM, Can I Visit Your Temple imagines the creation of a holy book of scriptures drawn from individual experiences. Music, movement and text merge to create a meditative space, as Bishop Black negotiates their own existence through piercing instruments and poetry.&nbsp;Bishop Black has been performing in theater since 2017, and working as a performance, drag and burlesque artist since 2012. Having worked in the field of film in recent years, they are now mainly developing unique but interconnected performances on stage, making use of mythology, occultism, queerness and dance as methodologies.

Widely regarded as one of the most original and influential artists of the 20th century, Diane Arbus’ bold black-and-white photographs demolish aesthetic conventions and upend all certainties. With Diane Arbus: Konstellationen, Gropius Bau presents the most comprehensive exhibition of her work to date. Featuring 454 prints, many of them shown here for the first time, Konstellationen offers new perspectives on Arbus’ iconic images and the wide range of her portraiture.

Ligia Lewis is a central figure in redefining performance within the context of the visual arts. In her multifaceted practice, she combines performance, live installation and film. From autumn 2025, Gropius Bau presents I’M NOT HERE FORRRRR…, the artist and choreographer’s most comprehensive solo exhibition to date. Persistence of Vision

Working in New York City between the Stonewall uprising of 1969 and the onset of the AIDS crisis in the 1980s, Peter Hujar captured a pivotal cultural moment in piercing black-and-white photographs. In the exhibition Persistence of Vision, Hujar’s photographs are interspersed with contemporary works by New York City-based artist Liz Deschenes, opening up an intergenerational dialogue on photography.&nbsp;

Bishop Black expresses themselves primarily by using movement as a language and their body as a tool, politicised through the lenses of sexuality, gender and race. As part of the Spätschicht x Schwules Museum programme, the performance Can I Visit Your Temple will take place in the atrium.

What do we need to unlearn in order to truly learn how to care? This is the question Perel explores in their performance Enfreakment (Homecoming), kicking off the Spätschicht x Schwules Museum programme. As an intervention, it will unfold over the evening within the exhibition Diane Arbus: Konstellationen.

Perel is an interdisciplinary artist whose work is centered on disability and queerness as they relate to care, consent, sexuality and personal and historic trauma. Utilising choreography to examine power exchange between the artist and audience, opening up spaces for processes of (un)learning. Their work includes performance, installation, criticism and curatorial projects. They often use collaboration as a platform for the exchange of disciplines, working methods and discourses with other choreographers, composers and visual artists. Central to Perel’s practice is the question of how we move through space and time with respect to our collected and lived histories. Their work has been shown for more than a decade at numerous galleries, theaters and performance spaces in the U.S. and abroad. Perel tours and teaches internationally, as a university lecturer and mentor to emerging disabled artists at organisations in New York and Berlin.

Enfreakment (Homecoming)

As part of Spätschicht x Schwules Museum Hugo Tepest reads from his book Sind Penisse real? [Are Penises Real?] – an essay on transition and self-perception, penises and society. The reading and subsequent discussion will be moderated by Lee Everett Thieler.

“For as long as I can remember, I was convinced that I could not be a man without a penis.” Hugo is in his mid-thirties when he begins his transition. Amid the chaos of his new masculinity, he searches for answers to what penises mean to him – for his body, his self-image, for who he was, who he is and who he can become – in society and in bed. To answer these questions, he speaks with people with and without penises about anxieties and power, about cultural history and its significance, about sexuality, size and fantasies. And he writes with disarming candour about a body part that is so much more than that.

Dark lipstick, a double strand of pearls, one leg bent with effortless elegance, a hand resting on a sofa’s armrest. In 1967, Diane Arbus titled this image Transsexual at home, N.Y.C. This external designation forms the starting point from which River Roux’s performance for Spätschicht x Schwules Museum unfolds.

River Roux is a performer, writer and dancer on the pole working across theatre and performance. Her initial performances took place in nightlife. Roux’s work centres the connections between labour, gender, care and sex, exploring how they relate to another. After a decade spent professionally undressing, she made her debut in theatre in Lola Arias’ Happy Nights at Theater Bremen in 2023. Her first solo JUICE (2024), realised with her co-creator Bibiana Mendes, is part of the repertoire at Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz Berlin. They are currently working on a new performance that engages with queer militancy and self-defense and will premiere at Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz in spring 2026. From 2021 to 2023, Roux was part of the Berlin Strippers Collective, staging feminist interventions in nightlife before moving on to create solo.&nbsp;

Transsexual at Home (First Try)

On the occasion of the first Spätschicht in the new year, curated in partnership with Schwules Museum, we will show Ulrike Ottinger’s film Freak Orlando (1981) – a collage of the satirical, the uncanny and the surreal. Ulrike Ottinger will be present for the screening.

In collaboration with Arsenal, Gropius Bau presents Ulrike Ottinger’s 1981 film Freak Orlando. Her “little world theatre” in five episodes tells of the lives and deaths of outsiders and the marginalised, of errors, incompetence, lust for power, fear, madness, cruelty and everyday life. Ottinger spans a bridge from mythological prehistory to the 20th century. Led by Orlando as a wanderer through the centuries, the episodic journey through time and places begins with a clearance sale of myths in a department store and ends at a “Festival of the Ugly.”Film: 128 minutes

The first edition of Spätschicht in the new year opens up a space for a queer gaze, in which society’s impositions are countered by a joyful exploration of queer desire, sexualities and bodies.

We are kicking off the year with a new edition of our Spätschicht event series, organised in collaboration with Schwules Museum. This edition centers the body as a place of negotiation, militantly rejecting society’s norms, relating to queer ancestors, or opening up a space of solidarity in a gesture of vulnerabilty. Look forward to a free live programme featuring a film screening followed by a conversation, a book presentation and three performances. Spätschicht x Schwules Museum is co-curated by Collin Klugbauer.
