On the occasion of the first Spätschicht in the new year, curated in partnership with Schwules Museum, we will show Ulrike Ottinger’s film Freak Orlando (1981) – a collage of the satirical, the uncanny and the surreal. Ulrike Ottinger will be present for the screening.
In collaboration with Arsenal, Gropius Bau presents Ulrike Ottinger’s 1981 film Freak Orlando. Her “little world theatre” in five episodes tells of the lives and deaths of outsiders and the marginalised, of errors, incompetence, lust for power, fear, madness, cruelty and everyday life. Ottinger spans a bridge from mythological prehistory to the 20th century. Led by Orlando as a wanderer through the centuries, the episodic journey through time and places begins with a clearance sale of myths in a department store and ends at a “Festival of the Ugly.”
