The Practice – What Moves Artists

The Practice – What Moves Artists&nbsp;is a book series by Gropius Bau that invites artists to showcase a practice that they pursue, that has influenced them or that has been with them for a long time. Widely regarded as one of the most original and influential artists of the 20th century, Diane Arbus’ bold black-and-white photographs demolish aesthetic conventions and upend all certainties. With Diane Arbus: Konstellationen, Gropius Bau presents the most comprehensive exhibition of her work to date. Featuring 454 prints, many of them shown here for the first time, Konstellationen offers new perspectives on Arbus’ iconic images and the wide range of her portraiture.

Ligia Lewis is a central figure in redefining performance within the context of the visual arts. In her multifaceted practice, she combines performance, live installation and film. From autumn 2025, Gropius Bau presents I’M NOT HERE FORRRRR…, the artist and choreographer’s most comprehensive solo exhibition to date. It brings together new and existing works that explore themes of race, gender, violence and resistance.

What has been the role of play in public space, both historically and in the present? Complementing BAUBAU, our free play space for kids, Gabriela Burkhalter’s Playing in the City presentation traces the history of playgrounds since their emergence in 1900 to today. The free presentation is open to all and can be seen in two rooms next to the play space’s entrance.

One of the most influential performance artists of all time, Marina Abramović presents Balkan Erotic Epic. The Exhibition at Gropius Bau in spring 2026. The show traces her ongoing engagement with ritual, eroticism, death and the body as a site of political resistance. Drawing on the folklore of Abramović’s native Balkans, the exhibition weaves together filmic and sculptural installations with live performance.

Persistence of Vision

Working in New York City between the Stonewall uprising of 1969 and the onset of the AIDS crisis in the 1980s, Peter Hujar captured a pivotal cultural moment in piercing black-and-white photographs. In the exhibition Persistence of Vision, Hujar’s photographs are interspersed with contemporary works by New York City-based artist Liz Deschenes, opening up an intergenerational dialogue on photography.&nbsp;

Playing, imagining, laughing, crying, letting off steam, making noise &ndash; all in an exhibition venue!&nbsp;We&rsquo;re excited to celebrate the reopening of our play space <a href="${link:{uuid:{df42e57d-a14a-4b44-a5e4-9d3e7dcab5a6},repository:{website},path:{/bfs-de/gropius-bau/programm/baubau}}}">BAUBAU</a> with a special event! Join us for a day full of fun as we transform the atrium into a big, pop-up adventure playground for kids.

Starting 14 March 2026, our play space BAUBAU&nbsp;will open its doors again after a short break. On this special day, in addition to the BAUBAU&nbsp;space&nbsp;on the ground floor, the nearby atrium will be turned into a pop-up playground by Suzanna Law from <a href="https://www.popupadventureplay.org/">Pop-Up Adventure Play</a>. Accompanied by our&nbsp;playworkers&nbsp;– trained staff focused on free play – kids can dive into a world of imagination. There will be all sorts of loose materials like cardboard boxes, fabrics, tubes and papers to explore and transform in endless ways. We can't wait to see you there!&nbsp;Pop-Up Adventure Play began in 2010 with the intention of developing a holistic, low-cost and community-based approach to supporting children’s play. The organisation works with a variety of stakeholders to improve children’s opportunities for play throughout their lives.&nbsp;

On 4 September, BAUBAU turns one year old &ndash; we&rsquo;re celebrating with music, play and surprises. We can&rsquo;t wait to see you there!

Exactly one year ago, our free play space for kids opened its doors on the ground floor of Gropius Bau. Since then, thousands of children have come to play freely, shaping the space according to their needs and imaginations. Join us as we honour the warm reception BAUBAU has received, and all the wonderful moments and memories.&nbsp;

All day long, we welcome walk-ins &ndash; no time-slot tickets needed! Enjoy a kids&rsquo; disco with music by Nzambisa, playful children&rsquo;s tattoos and a special surprise for anyone who shares their birthday with BAUBAU.&nbsp;

We created BAUBAU for kids. If too many adults visit while they are playing, it can change the feel of this space. Please note: accompanying adults are responsible for the supervision of their children. Once the space reaches full capacity, waiting times may occur. Thank you for your understanding!&nbsp;

Nzambisa is an emerging vinyl DJ from Berlin with a Congolese background. Her sets are influenced by diverse soundscapes, particularly from the African continent and its global diaspora. At times driving, at times experimental, Nzambisa moves fluidly between genres, inviting you to join her on a shared musical journey.&nbsp;

<a href="${link:{uuid:{02f6e2e1-2f95-49ef-b51e-a0b857d0115f},repository:{website},path:{/bfs-de/programm/2024/radical-playgrounds}}}">Radical Playgrounds</a> was an art parcours that took place in front of Gropius Bau in spring and summer 2024. As part of the reopening of <a href="${link:{uuid:{df42e57d-a14a-4b44-a5e4-9d3e7dcab5a6},repository:{website},path:{/bfs-de/gropius-bau/programm/baubau}}}">BAUBAU &ndash; a Play Space for Kids at Gropius Bau</a> &ndash; contributors to the resulting digital publication discuss the political dimensions of play in the city.

Radical Playgrounds used playground elements &ndash; be it a swing, a water fountain, a carousel or a labyrinth &ndash; to reveal what is left unspoken: histories of inclusion and exclusion, engaging activism through the medium of play or the dark past buried under the parking lot of Gropius Bau. A number of contributors to the resulting digital publication discuss the political agency of play, its healing potential, the history of playgrounds as well as what happens where more is allowed than forbidden.
