Aziz Ayse

30 min., Turkey 2005, Turkish with English subtiltles

Directed by: Elfe Uluc

Featuring: Sahin Çelik, Volga Sorgu

Ayse is an ex-transvestite of Kurdish origin around 45 years of age. Ayse makes his living by collecting trash. He makes charitable donations to people around him and to various foundations such as the Soldier-fund and the mosque-building fund. Thus, he has earned the nickname `Aziz´ which literally means saint. Aziz gives away most of his earnings from the trash and survives on just bread and water. At night, he gives his body away to young men who cannot afford prostitutes. The film tells the fictional story of one day in the life of Aziz. At the end of another day’s work of charity, Aziz is on his way home when he comes across two young men who don’t have any money. He takes them home with him but is, however, robbed by them in the morning. In the process, Aziz unwillingly kills one of the young men while the other runs away. Aziz, seeming somewhat unaware of what he has done, goes on with his charitable way of life. (Elfe Uluc)

In Transit

40 min., Turkey 2004, Turkish with English subtiltles

Directed by: Berke Bas

Three families: one Iraqi Arab, one Iraqi Kurd and another Nigerian, cross paths in Istanbul where they are stranded on their quest to migrate to a western country. `In Transit´ tries to capture the sense of time that is spent here waiting by focusing on their experiences as they adapt to the city yet are distanced from the locals and establish a transient lifestlye in a district mainly populated by domestic and foreign migrants. Their personal narratives about their dreams of the West, their eye-witness accounts of other migrants' lives, the human smuggling stories, their relationship with the locals and the police, as well as the children's take on the indefinite wait, create an intimate insight into the lives of many displaced people.
