November

25 min, Austria/Germany 2004

Directed by: Hito Steyerl

This project tackles the question of what is called terrorism these days and what was used to be called internationalism. It examines the associated gestures and poses, as well as their relationship to popular culture, especially cinema. Its point of origin is a feminist kung-fu film that Andrea Wolf and I made together in S-8 format, when we were aged 17. Now this amateur trash-movie has suddenly become a document. November is not a documentary about Andrea Wolf. It is not a film about the situation in Kurdistan. Instead, it reflects gestures of liberation after the end of history, as seen in popular culture and travelling images. This film is about the era of november, when revolution seems to be over and only its gestures keep circulating. (Hito Steyerl)

Ekmek Davasi

28 min., Turkey, 2003 Turkish with German subtitles

Directed by: F. Serkan Acer

In July 2003, F. Serkan Acer accompanied the organised and united workers of the handling and distribution department of the Turkish post (PTT) in Bahcelievler, Turkey. The workers, who possess no rights whatsoever (and have an income of approximately 170 Euros a month), are employed by temp-agencies who work with the turkish post, which is a state-run institution. It culminates in a strike that, as such, has never been seen before, and ultimately to an unforseeable end. The workers, anxious over their very existence, remain steadfast and act on the principle of the old Turkish saying: ‘we would rather die than to stray from our path. Our fight is the fight for our daily bread’. (A.W.)
