The international literature festival berlin, or ilb for short, is considered one of the most important literary festivals in the world. The programme for the 25th&nbsp;ilb will take place from 11 to 20&nbsp;September 2025. The Young Programme will run from 15 to 24&nbsp;September 2025. The main venue is the Haus der Berliner Festspiele, with additional locations for the Young Programme including Theater an der Parkaue and the Gelbe Villa.

The Performing Arts Season once again brings renowned international dance, theatre and performance productions to the Haus der Berliner Festspiele and the Gropius Bau. In this edition, the series focuses primarily on various concepts of identity.

Since the 1950s, Yoko Ono has been ahead of her time, leaving her mark on visual arts, music and activism. To honour her groundbreaking work, Gropius Bau presents the comprehensive solo exhibition&nbsp;YOKO ONO: MUSIC OF THE MIND. Spanning the first floor and the atrium of Gropius Bau, the show brings together over 200 works from seven decades, revealing her radical approach to language, art and participation that continues to speak to the present moment.

Playing, laughing, making noise, letting off steam, doing nothing – all in an exhibition venue! With BAUBAU, the artist Kerstin Br&auml;tsch designed an&nbsp;admission-free play space for kids, where more is allowed than forbidden. On Gropius Bau’s ground floor, colourful wallpapers, structures, objects and open-ended material called “loose parts” configure flexible spaces that are shaped by children’s activities.

What has been the role of play in public space, both historically and in the present? Complementing BAUBAU, our free play space for kids, Gabriela Burkhalter’s&nbsp;Playing in the City&nbsp;presentation traces the history of playgrounds since their emergence in 1900 to today. The free presentation is open to all and can be seen in two rooms next to the play space’s entrance.

The Practice – What Moves Artists

The Practice – What Moves Artists&nbsp;is a new book series by Gropius Bau that invites artists to showcase a practice that they pursue, that has influenced them or that has been with them for a long time. In the second volume of the series, artist, performer and author Vaginal Davis looks back on the saucy underground scenes of Los Angeles and Berlin together with former bandmates.&nbsp;On Dangerous Ground recounts past gigs, spectacular live performances and well-kept secrets.

In 2010 Berlin is celebrating its science anniversaries: the 200th anniversary of the Humboldt University, the 300th anniversary of the Charité, the 300th anniversary of the opening and first Statute of the Academy of Sciences and, in the following year, the 100th anniversary of the Max-Planck Society and Kaiser-Wilhelm Society respectively as well as the 350th anniversary of the National Library, the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin.
The exhibition “WeltWissen – World Knowledge. 300 Years of Science in Berlin”, scheduled to run from 24 September 2010 to 9 January 2011 in the Martin-Gropius-Bau, will be the high point of Berlin’s Year of Science 2010. For the first time since reunification Berlin is mounting a science exhibition that represents the whole city and presenting itself as an innovative scientific metropolis that is open to the world and mindful of its turbulent history.
The history of science in Berlin is a history of important scholars, Nobel Prize Laureates, pioneering inventions and achievements. Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, perhaps the last of the great universal scholars, did some of his work in Berlin. Albert Einstein put the finishing touches to his General Theory of Relativity here. Karl Richard Lepsius brought treasures from Egypt back to the city. The electron microscope was invented in Berlin. It was here that Konrad Zuse built the first computer. Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm wrote their famous “History of the German Language” in Berlin, and just two years ago a Berliner, Gerhard Ertl, received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry. Berlin was also a city where female researchers gave science a new impetus, making inroads into what had previously been a male preserve: Lise Meitner did basic research here into radioactivity. And in 1912 Lydia Rabinowitsch-Kempner was the first woman in Berlin to be awarded the title of professor for her successful study of tuberculosis. Berlin also boasts world-famous collections, from Rudolf Virchow’s anatomical and pathological preparations through the holdings of the Botanical and Natural History Museums to the antiques collection of the Staatliche Museen. “WeltWissen – World Knowledge” brings together these and many other topics in a major, cross-discipline show.
The exhibition in honour of the anniversary year 2010 places Berlin science in a world context, as it is only in the dynamic interplay of local and global networks that Berlin has been amassing for 300 years knowledge of the world which has then been sent back out into the world. However, “WeltWissen – World Knowledge” does not just showcase success stories, but also tells of lapses and false trails. Attention is drawn to scientists like the Nobel Prize Laureate Fritz Haber, who conducted experiments on ammonia synthesis that revolutionized food production worldwide yet is also considered to be a pioneer of chemical warfare. Rahel Hirsch exemplifies the enormity of the expulsions of Jewish scientists and academics after 1933. The exhibition shows this exodus of scholars fleeing National Socialism and the attempt to rebuild the city’s scientific resources afterwards in both West and East. In the Lichthof of the Martin-Gropius-Bau visitors will be welcomed by a large installation, a joint project between “WeltWissen – World Knowledge”, the design offices Space4 and Teamstratenwerth, and the American artist Mark Dion. Dion is a passionate collector whose obsessive passion moves him to develop objects and sculptures and arrange them in the form of installations reminiscent of natural history showrooms. In his famous productions – such as those at the Skulptur Projekt Munster, the Tate Britain, London, and the Museum of Modern Art, New York – he combines natural phenomena in artfully arranged scenarios. The Lichthof installation will present the wealth and variety of 300 years of scientific history in Berlin, while also emphasizing the patchwork nature of scientific knowledge driven by human curiosity.
Apart from guided tours, the exhibition offers an extensive events programme in which experts in various fields will demonstrate their approaches to subjects of current research in lectures, discussions and presentations. Videobus tours will take visitors from the Martin-Gropius-Bau to the scientific sights of Berlin. The exhibition also features a didactic programme for children and young people as well as special offers for schools, like the “junior labs”.

In two seminars during the summer semester of 2024, students from the Berlin University of the Arts and the University of Hildesheim have explored the festival’s history from various perspectives. Introducing: Jazzfest Research Lab

To mark its 60th anniversary, Jazzfest Berlin is celebrating the cultural diversity of the neighbouring district of Moabit in collaboration with around 35 official partners and initiatives and with over 350 participants of all ages.&nbsp;In June 2024, interviews were conducted with 20 partners who presented their perspectives, wishes and ideas for the Jazzfest Community Lab Moabit. The 10 Remarkable Productions 2024

On 26 January, the Theatertreffen’s jury of critics announced their selection of 10 remarkable productions for the 2024 Theatertreffen at a press conference. Our congratulations go to the nominated production teams and all participants! The programme will be published on 5 April.

Theatertreffen 2024

“Radical Playgrounds”, an art parcours at the Gropius Bau, is spending eleven weeks exploring the differences between the concepts of play as competition and free play. Visitors are invited to walk and climb on the various installations and sculptures, to activate them and to shape the project collectively.

Summer School 2025

As part of Performing Exiles there will be a Summer School from 16 to 28&nbsp;June 2025. This will offer workshops, seminars and mentoring. The participants will see the performances and guest productions in the festival programme and visit artistic initiatives and cultural institutions in Berlin that operate across a wide range of disciplines and contexts. A public presentation of the participants’ current work and research at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele will complete the programme.
