“An intimate look at André Kertész” or “André Kertész: A Personal View”

Saturday 11 June 2011 | 11:00

Venue: Martin-Gropius-Bau, cinema

This lecture by Robert Gurbo, curator of the Andre and Elizabeth Kertész Foundation, traces the life and work of Andre Kertész from its early roots in Hungary in 1912, through his extraordinarily creative period in Paris between the wars, all the way through to the artist's last days in New York in 1985. Using Kertész's self portraits, famous photographs and many unpublished images, the talk weaves an intimate and provocative portrait of the artist and his lifelong struggle to remain true to his art. Gurbo, former assistant to André Kertész in the last years of his life, has spent over 30 years studying Kertész photographs and this talk presents an opportunity to hear his unique perspective on an artist who he claims to have been “obsessed with” for close to four decades.

The lecture will be held in English.
