The international literature festival berlin, or ilb for short, is considered one of the most important literary festivals in the world. The programme for the 25th&nbsp;ilb will take place from 11 to 20&nbsp;September 2025. The Young Programme will run from 15 to 24&nbsp;September 2025. The main venue is the Haus der Berliner Festspiele, with additional locations for the Young Programme including Theater an der Parkaue and the Gelbe Villa.

A&nbsp;Play Space for Kids

Playing, laughing, making noise, letting off steam, doing nothing – all in an exhibition venue! With BAUBAU, the artist Kerstin Br&auml;tsch designed an&nbsp;admission-free play space for kids, where more is allowed than forbidden. On the Gropius Bau’s ground floor, colourful wallpapers, structures, objects and open-ended material called “loose parts” configure flexible spaces that are shaped by children’s activities.

A Short History from 1900 to the Present

What has been the role of play in public space, both historically and in the present? Complementing BAUBAU, our free play space for kids, Gabriela Burkhalter’s&nbsp;Playing in the City&nbsp;presentation traces the history of playgrounds since their emergence in 1900 to today. The free presentation is open to all and can be seen in two rooms next to the play space’s entrance.

For more than three decades, Rirkrit Tiravanija has been expanding the possibilities of what can happen in an exhibition space. As part of his practice, the artist creates situations that offer space to eat and drink, play and rest. They encourage chance encounters, relationships and their failure – in other words: life.&nbsp;The exhibition&nbsp;DAS GL&Uuml;CK IST NICHT IMMER LUSTIG&nbsp;(Happiness is not always fun)&nbsp;presents more than 80 of the artist’s works created between 1987 and 2024.

Die Ausstellung ermöglicht durch die Präsentation von etwa 200 Arbeiten – darunter Gemälde, Zeichnungen und Grafiken – einen neuen Blick auf zwei zentrale Künstler der Klassischen Moderne im deutschen Sprachraum.
In chronologischer Gliederung und in acht großen Etappen gruppiert zeigt die Ausstellung prominente Schlüsselwerke von Johannes Itten und Paul Klee. Der Fokus liegt dabei auf ihre künstlerische Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema der Farbe.
Es werden jeweils unterschiedliche Aspekte herausgearbeitet: 
 Farbe und Esoterik 
 Farbaura 
 Farbharmonie 
 Farbe und Abstraktion 
 Farbe und Natur 
 Teilung der Farbe
Erstmals kann dabei gezeigt werden, dass nicht nur Klee Itten, sondern auch Itten Klee inspirierte und dass beide aus gemeinsamen Quellen schöpften. Die Lebenswege und Schaffensbahnen beider aus dem Kanton Bern stammenden Künstler haben sich mehrfach gekreuzt: So hat Johannes Itten seine ersten künstlerischen Impulse vom Vater Paul Klees erhalten, umgekehrt ist Paul Klees Berufung ans Weimarer Bauhaus massgeblich von Johannes Itten befördert worden. Beide Künstler haben ihre lebenslange Auseinandersetzung mit den Fragen der Farbenlehre und der Ordnung des Farbkosmos nahezu gleichzeitig im Jahre 1914/1915 begonnen, Klee auf seiner Tunisreise, Itten unter dem Eindruck der Farbenlehre Adolf Hölzels in Stuttgart. Beide Künstler haben über Jahre hinweg ihre künstlerische Arbeit wechselseitig wahrgenommen und auch Werke ausgetauscht.
Umso überraschender ist es, dass Johannes Itten und Paul Klee bislang nicht in einer monographischen Ausstellung im künstlerischen Paarlauf gezeigt worden sind.
Biographische Asymmetrien mögen hierfür verantwortlich sein: Kurz nach dem Eintreffen Klees in Weimar 1921 hat Itten das Bauhaus 1923 verlassen. Erst Ende 1938 ist Itten in die Schweiz zurückgekehrt. Während Paul Klee schon im Jahre 1940 verstarb, hat ihn Johannes Itten um mehr als zweieinhalb Jahrzehnte überlebt. Ittens monumentale Publikation zur Kunst der Farbe ist erst 1961 erschienen, und lange Zeit war über Ittens Reflexion zur Farbe aus den vorausgehenden Jahrzehnten nur wenig bekannt. Das hat sich nun durch neue Quellenfunde aus dem Nachlass Johannes Ittens geändert, so dass die Chronologie und die Stationen seiner Auseinandersetzung mit der Farbe anhand farbprächtiger Tagebuchseiten rekonstruiert werden können.
Beide haben in der Galerie „Der Sturm“ von Herwarth Walden im Berlin der 1920er Jahre ausgestellt. Johannes Itten betrieb 1926 bis 1934 seine Itten-Schule in der Konstanzerstrasse 14 in Berlin – ein weiterer Grund, die Ausstellung in Berlin zu zeigen.

Johannes Itten and Paul Klee made their mark in the history of 20th century art with theories of colour that were as important as they were conspicuous. Both proceeded from the assumption that the order of colours was logically structured as a self-contained cosmos. New sources show that both artists referred to the same intellectual sources, some of them esoteric, and inspired each other. Both developed their ideas about colour in the course of decades of reflection and work and applied them liberally in their art.
In its presentation of about 200 works – including paintings, drawings and graphics – the exhibition takes a fresh look at two leading representatives of Classical Modernism in the German language area.
In chronological order and grouped into eight main stages, the exhibition shows key works by Johannes Itten and Paul Klee, the focus being on their artistic use of colour.

In two seminars during the summer semester of 2024, students from the Berlin University of the Arts and the University of Hildesheim have explored the festival’s history from various perspectives. Introducing: Jazzfest Research Lab

To mark its 60th anniversary, Jazzfest Berlin is celebrating the cultural diversity of the neighbouring district of Moabit in collaboration with around 35 official partners and initiatives and with over 350 participants of all ages.&nbsp;In June 2024, interviews were conducted with 20 partners who presented their perspectives, wishes and ideas for the Jazzfest Community Lab Moabit. The 10 Remarkable Productions 2024

On 26 January, the Theatertreffen’s jury of critics announced their selection of 10 remarkable productions for the 2024 Theatertreffen at a press conference. Our congratulations go to the nominated production teams and all participants! The programme will be published on 5 April.

“Radical Playgrounds”, an art parcours at the Gropius Bau, is spending eleven weeks exploring the differences between the concepts of play as competition and free play. Visitors are invited to walk and climb on the various installations and sculptures, to activate them and to shape the project collectively.

Summer School 2025

As part of Performing Exiles there will be a Summer School from 16 to 28&nbsp;June 2025. This will offer workshops, seminars and mentoring. The participants will see the performances and guest productions in the festival programme and visit artistic initiatives and cultural institutions in Berlin that operate across a wide range of disciplines and contexts. A public presentation of the participants’ current work and research at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele will complete the programme.
