Reading Group
Masculinities: Liberation through Photography, Installationview, 16. Okctober 2020 until 10. January 2021, Gropius Bau Photo: Luca Girardini
Offering the opportunity to collaboratively read and discuss texts, a reading group accompanies the exhibition Masculinities: Liberation through Photography. In this third and final session we will read texts by Raewyn Connell and James Messerschmidt as well as Patricia Hill Collins.
We will use these readings to reflect on how the performance of masculinity is often connected with ideas of hegemony, social power and agency and seek to complicate this relationship.
Texts
Raewyn Connell and James Messerschmidt, Hegemonic Masculinity: Rethinking the Concept, 2005
Patricia Hill Collins, Booty Call: Sex, Violence, and Images of Black Masculinity (from Black Sexual Politics, 2004)
These sessions will kick off the “Connected within that Light”: Reading/Theory Group Series at the Gropius Bau that loosely accompanies and augments the institution’s exhibition programme in 2020 and 2021. It is facilitated by Berlin-based independent curator, writer and scholar Kathy-Ann Tan.
