With Layer(s), choreographer and performer Kihako Narisawa presents an open-form performance, conceived in collaboration with her Forecast mentor, Hussein Chalayan, that confronts the construction of diversity. Layer(s) will be performed twice this evening.
Layer(s) explores how identity is curated, performed and perceived, where presence, perception and cultural as well as intersectional codes shape what we recognise as diversity. The work positions itself as one of many diversities: a situated, embodied perspective shaped by Narisawa’s multilingual and transnational background as an Asian woman in Europe, examining how projection and cultural expectations construct meaning around a body in performance. Treating the performer as both subject and fiction – a mannequin, a portal or a disembodied character – the piece unfolds in 20-minute fragments in which the choreographer and performer investigates layers of identity, projection and representation.
Kihako Narisawa is an interdisciplinary artist, choreographer, performer and designer. Her conceptual practice spans text, sound, video, installation, live performance and spatial design. Narisawa’s work is informed by ongoing investigations into spatial theory, anthropology and both verbal and non-verbal communication.
