On Wednesday, 18 March 2026, we’re kicking off our 2026 exhibition programme. Join us for the opening of Peter Hujar / Liz Deschenes: Persistence of Vision with free admission to the exhibition and a DJ set by Maque.
Bringing together the works of Peter Hujar and Liz Deschenes, Persistence of Vision opens an intergenerational dialogue on photography. Working in New York City between the Stonewall uprising of 1969 and the onset of the AIDS crisis in the 1980s, Peter Hujar captured a pivotal cultural moment in piercing black-and-white photographs. Alongside incisive images of animals, nature and urban ruins, he portrayed New York’s downtown avant-garde and queer communities, including figures such as Candy Darling, Susan Sontag and David Wojnarowicz.
Marking the first major exhibition of both Hujar’s and Deschenes’ work in Berlin, the show proposes an expansive understanding of the medium while foregrounding the uncompromising clarity of vision that defines their practices.
Maque is a Bolivian artist who understands pleasure and movement as transformative power. Her work brings together music production, choreography, curation, DJing and audiovisual practice, considering them extensions of the performative body. She has presented her work at venues and platforms such as Sophiensaele, Keep Hush, HKW, CTM, Kunsthalle Wien, Meta Rave and Berlin Art Week. Maque co-founded Choka and Suena LATAM — platforms dedicated to amplifying sounds and practices from the Global South. She has been co-curator of the EXPO Festival at English Theatre Berlin and a fellow at the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art in New York. In 2025 she released her debut EP Baba and Baba Remixes via Lustpoderosa. Her sound is a deconstructed, sexy, industrial perreo in both her live shows and DJ sets. Since 2022 she has been a guest teacher at Hochschulübergreifendes Zentrum Tanz Berlin (HZT), facilitating classes and seminars on Yoggaton, Perreo in Performance and LATAM club sounds and practices.
